Speech Therapy FAQ

How long will it take before my child will be able to speak?

It depends. For some people it can be a couple of months and others may take longer and in some cases a few years. Each individual is different.

During speech therapy we look at age appropriate based activities to help each individual progress with their speech development. There are a number of factors that can contribute to how long it will take, however the most important factor is to seek help as soon as possible. The earlier you can identify and start supporting a child with communication or speech difficulties the better.

When should I start my child in speech therapy?

The sooner the better! For young children, the first 5 years are key to their learning and development. Assisting children with communication from a young age can help them better understand what is being said to them, and, they can also learn how to express their needs and wants more effectively. These skills are essential for them to become effective learners and communicators both now and during their schooling years.

If you are unsure if your child should see a speech therapist, please call Andrea today for a free discovery discussion to help you decide when the time is right for your child.

Can I do exercises at home to help with my child's speech development?

Yes. In most cases for parents or careers that would like to continue the development at home we can share some tips and simple speech therapy exercises that can be completed between visits.

Each plan is tailored to the individual needs. Exercises are age appropriate and targeted at a specific behaviour or skill development. This can include a range of play based activities and/or reading at home.  Your Speech Pathologist will guide you through any home exercise plans including the type of activities and the ideal frequency of completion.

Can you help my child improve their communication so they can have a conversation?

Absolutely. Through speech therapy we can help kids, teens and adults improve their communication skills and social language skills. It is not uncommon to be able to speak and even say sentences however not have the social skills to maintain a conversation.

What is the difference between a Kids Speech Therapist and a Speech Pathologist?

Nothing. In Australia, Speech Pathologists are also often referred to as Speech Therapists. The name was changed from Therapist to Pathologist a number of years ago. Another term used to describe the same profession is a Speech-Language Pathologist although this term is more commonly used in the US.

Can I claim a medicare rebate for Kids Speech Therapy?

Yes, but their are some conditions that apply. To claim a medicare rebate for speech pathology you will need your referring Doctor to send through the appropriate referral and complete an Enhanced Primary Care Plan (EPC). There are conditions to meet however if you are eligible for EPC then this will allows for up to a total of 5 rebated speech pathology consults, per year.

In consultation with your Doctor you may decide to use the 5 visits with your Speech Pathologist however it may also include visits to other allied health practitioner like Physiotherapists, podiatry, dietetics etc.
